From AI model to 3D print
An AI model from a photo prints well once you do three things in the slicer: give it a real size, orient it so the flat bottom sits on the plate, and add supports under arms, handles and other overhangs. This guide covers those steps and the mesh problems AI models tend to have.
- 60–100 mm tall
- 0.12–0.16 mm for figures
- Hollow it, 2 mm walls, two drain holes

How it works
- Step 1
Scale it
AI models have no size. 60–100 mm tall is a good first print for a figurine.
- Step 2
Find the base
Rotate the model so its largest flat area lies on the plate; use the slicer's lay-on-face tool.
- Step 3
Add supports
Tree supports for organic shapes on FDM; auto supports at a light density on resin.
- Step 4
Check the preview
Look for floating islands in the sliced layers before you print.

Problems you will see, and fixes
Loose fragments around the model: the AI sometimes leaves small separate pieces. Delete them in the slicer (split to objects, remove the small ones) or in Blender.
A thin part breaks or doesn't print: straps, antennae and fingers often come out thinner than 1 mm. Scale the model up, print those areas slower, or thicken them in Blender with a Solidify modifier.
The bottom isn't flat: cut 1–2 mm off the base with the slicer's cut tool so it sits steadily.
FDM or resin
FDM in PLA is fine for figures from 80 mm upward. Below that, detail from the 700,000-triangle mesh is lost to the nozzle, and resin shows much more of it.
On resin, hollow the model to save material and avoid cracks, and add drain holes near the base.
Multi-color prints
STL carries no color. Convert the STL to 3MF and paint regions in Bambu Studio for AMS prints; the GLB texture is a useful reference for which part gets which color.
Questions
Which printer is best for AI models?+
Any modern FDM printer works for larger prints. For figures under 80 mm, a resin printer keeps far more of the detail.
Should I simplify the mesh before printing?+
Not usually. Slicers handle 700,000 triangles fine. Reduce it only if your slicer or a print service limits file size.
